Never Say Never: Shadowland is now a paperback

Never say never. That should be written in big black letters on my office wall. Because if I say ‘never’, it’s pretty much a guarantee that I end up doing the very thing I said I’d never do.

Part historical drama, part political thriller, part mind-bending fantasy, Shadowland is a book that defies is genre, daring the reader to go on a journey into the shadowiest recesses of reality.
Out now on Amazon or through this website.

I was never going to bring out another paperback. At this point, I really should be telling you the stories of the sagas of trouble that paperbacks have caused me. The stories would tell tales of thieving publishers, dishonest printers, and second-hand sales anomalies on Amazon (for example, the very day a book was released, when even I hadn’t got a copy yet, there were second-hand copies for sale everywhere on Amazon. Really?!). But it’s all a rather long story, or several stories actually, and I’m sure you don’t need to hear it.

The short of it is that it took a lot of emotional energy to push through a wall and bring out ebook versions again. The effort it was taking to even consider a paperback version for any of my books was herculean. But then there was that stunning cover for Shadowland … and people who said they just don’t buy ebooks.

And so my sister, Naomi (my partner in all things publishing), worked on a smashing book version for me and now there it is, out on Amazon, as a print book. And just between you and me, it is my favourite paperback of all the paperback versions my books have ever been.

I so greatly wanted to offer the book as a good price for everyone, but the truth is, I make almost nothing on the paperback. Amazon gets the rest and there’s nothing I can do about it. Put it this way … The Australian version is, as of writing this, $26.95. I make $1.40. Guess who gets the rest? And as I am surrounded by things that are sold in British Pounds, it converts to 70 pence (or the spending equivalent of 70c). Hardly a king’s ransom. But that is the reality of being a writer. We do more than 90% of the work and we get less than 10% of the profits.

If you much prefer paperbacks, you can show your support by buying the paperback for Shadowland on Amazon, available in all countries. And the money earned will go towards bringing out paperbacks for the others. (UPDATE: Three more books are now paperbacks and Redemption is coming by the end of 2022.)

If you prefer the ebook, you can get it for your Kindle on Amazon, read it free through Kindle Unlimited, or purchase it through this site as an ebook + PDF package. Whichever way you buy it, know that I am unbelievably grateful that you would invest your time in one of my books. I know how precious time is.
